A fun cheap project. This is another easy plant to grow in your house windowsill. We have had a lot of fun watching our little avocado pit grow. I really wasn't sure it was going to work. It seemed like a crazy idea, but we did it! So how do you do it.
--First, buy an avocado from the store and remove all of the fruit around the pit. Rinse the pit clean.
--Stick three to four toothpicks, evenly spaced, into the avocado pit at the middle (we used sucker sticks just because that was all we had at the time. I wouldn't recommend it).
--Use the toothpicks sticking out of the pit to balance the pit onto the top edge of a cup or vase.
--Leave the more pointed pointed end upward.
--Keep the bottom half covered in water for the next 3-6 weeks, you will watch the avocado pit crack open at the top and a root will begin to grow out of the bottom.
--Wait until you have a small green sprout emerging from the top crack of your avocado pit, before you transfer it to soil.
--Once you can see a green plant emerging from the top move it into flower pot (make sure the soil is enriched).
--When you plant it, leave the top half inch of the pit out of the soil, pat the soil firmly around this area.
--Once the Stem grows about 5-6 inches pluck off the top leaves, so the root is able to grow stronger.
--Keep the soil moist, but not muddy.
--Keep your plant in a windowsill where it can get plenty of sunlight and it should continue to grow healthy and strong.
--It can eventually be planted outdoors if you have mild weather, such as that found in Southern California, but otherwise you will have to keep your avocado indoors, except during the summer months.
