I thought I had blogged about this but have received a few emails asking what my science experiment was that I posted a picture about here. It wasn't anything too fancy, but the kids loved it! We did an experiment where we first tested the density of a lot of random items around the house in water. The kids loved it, but then to take it a step further we layered different liquids to get different densities.
1. First we filled our glass vases with 1/3 syrup
2. Next add 1/3 of water
3. And finally 1/3 with oil
4. Wait for them to stay separated. They will separate because they each have a distinctly different density.
5. Now using a Penny, Wood Chip, and Lego check out the density of each of these objects. Each should float on a different level because each of them have different densities. A few of our scientists snuck leaves in too. :) You could also try a grape or a cork.
(The most dense will be at the bottom and the least dense will be at the top)
