This past weekend I ran..... and ran and ran. And got very sore! I ran the Ragnar Relay in Southern California and some of those hills were killers and made my muscles beyond sore. I had heard that chocolate milk was good for sore muscles, so I stocked up on that and let me tell ya... it worked like a charm!!
I was interested in the reasoning behind it, so I googled it. Here's what I found (from this article):
- Milk may be just as effective as some commercial sports drinks in helping with recovery of sore muscles and rehydrating your body.
- Chocolate milk has the advantage of additional nutrients that are obviously absent in most sports drinks.
- When consumed after exercise, it can help refuel tired muscles because of its mix of high-quality protein and carbohydrates.
- The chocolate milk also contains fluids for rehydration and minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium that people need to replace after strenuous activity.

I've been reading up alot on magnesium which is most abundant in chocolate. Magnesium causes muscles to relax and that's probably why chocolate milk helps sore muscles. It also is said to lower high blood pressure. So for all you runners out there, take your magnesium, you need it for good electrolyte balance. Look it up, the internet has loads of info.

've been having sore leg muscles from track practice... today it was the worst-- but out of boredom I drank a mug of milk and in two minutes my muscles were relieved by a significant amount. I thought to myself... this is too good to be true. So what do you think? Is it the milk? And if it is, what's in it thats helping? The potassium possibly...? Because I heard bananas help with cramps, and bananas have a ton of potassium...

Why does chocolate milk heal sore muscles?
I wanna know the answer. I have heard this and I know it's true...but what is the ingredient and/or quotient in it that heals or soothes sore muscles? Another question: I don't happen to have processed chocolate milk handy, but I DO have some cocoa and 1% milk. So if I mix those together to make chocolate milk THAT way, will it still have the same healing effect?
